Tourism to Cuba increased by 23% in the first half of 2017, and Australians make up a large number of the visitors to this beautiful island. Many Australians are drawn by the possibility of adventure and the rich and varied history that Cuba has to offer.
The trade embargo against Cuba can make travelling to Cuba more difficult for those who cannot access direct flights – and this includes those travelling from Australia. With this in mind, we’ve put together this guide for the best way to get to Cuba from Australia.
Sydney is over 15,000km away from Cuba and the most direct route appears to be to travel via the US. While flights from the US to Cuba are now readily available, this isn’t the best way to get to Cuba from Australia – or the cheapest!
Travelling via the US is problematic as you will need to make sure you are travelling with a non-US airline. US airlines are not permitted to issue boarding passes to non-US citizens travelling from the US to Cuba unless they can prove they are travelling for one of the 12 approved travel categories. This is an added complication that you really don’t need!
Instead, we think the best way to travel to Cuba from Australia is by travelling through Europe. There are plenty of cheap flights to Europe from Australia and then on to Cuba from Europe. It’s also a very popular way to break up the flight as you can combine the trip with a city break in Europe.
Flying through Germany is one of the cheapest options, with direct flights from Munich, Cologne, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt. According to Skyscanner, the cheapest month to fly is September and there are direct flights to Havana from Cologne for as little as $646.
Other popular routes for travelling from Australia to Cuba include Paris, Manchester, Toronto and Santiago de Chile. There’s no denying that travelling from Australia to Cuba will involve a few stops along the way, but with some careful planning, you can combine your trip with some fun city stops and see a little bit more of the world along the way!
The majority of the flights to Cuba will land in Havana, but you may be able to find a cheap deal to other airports in the country. Other options include Varadero, Holguin and Cayo Coco.
Another tip is to travel out of season. The summer months are naturally the most popular times to visit Cuba, but you can find incredible flight deals on the edge of the peak season. December to May is the dry season, which means you can expect clear skies and cooler temperatures. August to October is the hurricane season, so you may be able to find cheap flights, but run the risk of encountering some serious weather.
